Obituary

On August 26, 1922, in McCrory, Arkansas, Dallas Word was born to Henrietta and Lott D. Word. he was the eldest son of five children, Dora, Irene, Dell & O.C.

In 1946 he wed Geraldine Brown, his wife of 57 years who preceded him in death in December 2003. To their union were born three children, Theria, Dallas, Jr. and Dollie. he received Christ and was baptized in 1958 with two of his children.

Dallas was known throughout the years as "Daddy", "Blue", "Texas", "Granddaddy" and "Papa". Always with a grin and a semi-funny joke. He was friendly, sincere and helpful as a neighbor. It was always interesting to hear a story of how things were when he was a boy and how things have changed. To him, a good Christmas was a shoebox filled with an apple, an orange, and a few pieces of peppermint candy. A dedicated family man, Daddy was always there.

For 38 years, daddy worked for United States Steel on the south side of Chicago where he only missed 2 work days (one during the snow storm of 1967 and the other while on his last 13 week vacation before retirement. The schedule changed without his knowledge and he missed a day)In order to provide for his family, he braved sickness, inclement weather and used public transportation until he was able to purchase a car.

Dallas leaves to cherish his memory his only living sister, Irene Hunter of St. Louis, Missouri, his three children, grandchildren (Fran, Brenda, Lori, Ivan, Tyler, Monique, Darrell, Barry, Tina, Cindy, Lisa, and Dallas III); great-grandchidlren (Janeice, Cory, Courtney, Maya, Marcus, Lauren, Tyrone, Aiyann, Julia, Simone and Julia); one great-great-granddaughter; (Aniyah) and a hosto fo family members and friends.

Homegoing services were held 12:30 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2007 in the Golden Gate Chapel, officiated by the Reverend Gaylon McDowell of Christ Universal Temple. Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
