On September 16, 1921, Dorsey Cook and his wife, Virginia Rice Cook welcomed into the world their third child and only son, Lee Grant. They raised young Lee Grant in a humble, 1-room home with his two older sisters, Bessie and Cleo in Montgomery, Alabama.
At the age of 10, young Lee Grant came to Christ and was baptized at the New Canaan Baptist Church of Montgomery, Alabama. It was here that his educational career began in a one-room church and schoolhouse.
In 1938, Lee Grant officially began his lifelong career as a carpenter. he helped to build the 99th. Air Force Base in Tuskegee, Alabama. As of 1948, he had become a member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers and maintained good standing with the union until his recent passing. That same year he moved with his family from Alabama to Chicago where he became a member of Omega Baptist Church. At Omega, he not only worshipped with the congregation, but he served as the Superintendent of the church Sunday School and sang in the choir.
Rev. L.G. Cook stepped into the beginnings of his divinely ordered legacy as a spiritual leader on April 17, 1966. On this day, he bacame Pastor of True Believers Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago, Il with 14 people in current membership. he often recalled his first Sunday Morning Service, which was attended by 13 of the members of the congregation. The service was held in a funeral home and prior to beginning morning worship, he had to remove a body from the room.
In December of 1973, True Believers Missionary Baptist Church moved to its current home and membership expanded. This progress afforded an opportunity to focus on the spiritual development of the youth.
As of May 1, 2006, Rev. L.G. Cook, retired as Pastor of Ture Believers M.B. Church after 40 years of service. He was honored to leave the church free of any debts, with all of the bills paid and a great many assets.
Rev. Lee Grant Cook peacefully departed this life in the early morning of Thursday, February 21, 2008.
Visitation will take place at True Believers Church, 7801 S. Wolcott on Friday, February 29, 2008 from 12 noon til 6:00 p.m.
Funeral will be on Saturday, March 1, 2008 @ 10:00 a.m. and Internment will follow services at Oak Woods Cemetery located 67th. Cottage Grove.
