Robert Bradley Harris was born to Pearl Bradley on November 21, 1933. She preceded him in death, while he was still a young teenage at age 16. He was then raised by his grandfather, Thomas Bradley. He attended Wendell Phillips High School where he was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp. He often played trumpet in the Marching Band until he graduated in 1951. He immediately joined the army and eventually became a first class sergeant (PFC for the Camouflage Unit). He served for 2 years and 2 months. Afterwards he attended Wilson Jr. College for 2 years, majoring in real estate and insurance. He was later employed by McKey and Poague Realty where he served for about 7 years. Afterwards he was hired by Draper & Kramer realty. His last occupation before retirement was at O?Hare Airport as custodial manager over hundreds of employees.
He met and married Nelvenia Wainwright in 1964. From that union a daughter was born named Marguerite Pearl Harris, who now resides in Paris, France.
In the 1970s he became a member of St. John Baptist Temple located at 62nd and Woodlawn, on the South side of Chicago, where he confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and served on the deacon board for a short while.
He was very active in the community and in politics. A prominent but somewhat quiet figure, he worked best behind the scenes. He was a lifetime member of the Woodlawn Organization and also a member of the Rainbow Push Organization serving as a Volunteer Deputy Registration Officer from 2000 until 2010. He later moved to the Bronzeville area and became a faithful active member of the Gap Community Organization until death.
He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma some years ago. During the last years of his life he became even more active in his community and kept himself busy with helping others until his health failed. He always found ways to help the neighbors in his community in any way he could. He enjoyed hanging with his Barber Shop buddies and reminiscing about the ?good ole? days?.
He leaves to mourn a wife Nelvenia Harris, a daughter Marguerite Harris, a sister Elsa Harris, 2 nephews, Warren Lee Wainwright Jr., Eric Lee Wainwright of Louisville, KY, niece Faith Chapman, a favorite cousin Richard Bradley and family, Aunt Lucille ?Bunchie? Bradley and her daughter Jo Anne Tucker from Mesa, Arizona, cousin Lillie Mae Lewis and family, and a host of many more nieces, nephews, first cousins, relatives and friends.
